In Businessmap, subtasks help you split tasks into smaller items. So, what happens when a subtask requires more time and effort to complete? You can convert it to a card! Here is how.
Converting a Subtask into a Card
When you need to complete a card that still has unfinished subtasks, you may want to convert these subtasks into separate cards and keep the workflow smooth. Alternatively, a subtask may prove to be more time-consuming or need more research to complete. In these cases, you can convert them to cards.
Watch this short video to see how to do it, or follow the instructions below:
To convert a subtask, open the Subtasks tab of the respective card. Hover over the subtask you want to convert, click on the Options menu (the three dots), and select the “Convert to card” option.
When converting a subtask to a card, you have two options:
- Convert it into a new, independent card.
- Convert it into a new card and link it to the original card as child/parent/relative/predecessor/successor. The system allows you to copy certain card properties from the original card. To do so, click on the icon next to the link type.
Note about deadlines: If you select the “Convert into new card” option, the new card will inherit the subtask's deadline (if present). However, if you want to copy fields from the originator card and select “Deadline” from the “Copy Card Details” modal, the newly created card will inherit the original card's deadline.
Once you choose a conversion action, the system will open the Board Minimap tool and prompt you to define the new card's location:
- Use the dropdown menu to select the Board, and you will instantly get the respective board's workflow mirrored in the tool.
- Select the card's position in the workflow by placing the mouse cursor on it.
The new card will appear on the screen. Its title will inherit the subtask's name. If the subtask had an owner and attachments, both properties would be preserved. You can add more card details, then click Add the card to complete the conversion.
Important: When converting multiple subtasks at once, the “Copy Card Details” option is not available. Additionally, if a default template is set for the target location, it will not be applied to the new cards during bulk conversion. The template will only be applied if you convert the subtasks individually.
Note: Whenever users convert a subtask into a card, the system logs entries in the card's history.
